From Where I Sit: 9/11/15
Today, 14 years ago, I was mindlessly cleaning my house. I had the radio on because my cable was out. I had put my oldest on the bus, just an hour earlier, for her day at Kindergarten. My youngest was hanging out with me, eating her breakfast I think. It was the beginning of a nice day, a productive day. And then…. You know that silence over the airwaves of the radio? When the noise suddenly stops? Yeah, that. Well, I am looking at my radio, unplugging and plugging it back in, checking for bad batteries, when the broadcaster comes back on the air. I will never forget the cracking in his voice; the kind of stutter that precedes an overflow of tears and emotion. He had the unfortunate duty of informing his listeners about the events that were so tragically unfolding hundreds of miles away in New York City, D.C., and western PA. My mouth is gapping open and tears are welling. My daughter asked me, “What’s wrong momma?” I didn’t know what to tell her. How could I rock the fragile core of a 3-year-old’s soul? “Oh, nothing baby girl. Finish your breakfast okay.” I said. So very soon after, I ran to the elementary school to pick up my oldest daughter. As I am signing her out, I am witnessing, live, the second plane hit the second tower. I, along with the other folks gathered in the office, gasp loudly in disbelief. September 11th, 2001 was decidedly the single most devastating day for me, and countless others, up until that point in my life. That’s where I was that day and in that moment. The events that followed were equally tragic but one thing that came out of this horrific day in U.S. History was the MASSIVE amount of unity, love, and brotherhood. No, we will NEVER FORGET. We will, however, survive and thrive. That is what our great nation is built upon. God Bless America! God Bless our military! God bless our first responders! Thank you so much for all you do!!! |

Tucker is busy! Most of my time spent traveling through this town on daily routines is done in a vehicle. It is only while my van's transmission is being fixed did I really get to enjoy the art of the pedestrian-style commute again. In my youth, I ventured everywhere by walking. I took to the metro Atlanta streets and the MARTA train service like it was vital to my health. In all actuality, it really was! Walking is good for you; body and soul. I feel MUCH more refreshed when I have taken in fresh morning air. My walk today was short but very enjoyable. I walked to the end of my driveway, then the end of my street, then across two busy roads to make it to my destination: our local Starbucks. I made it a point to sit outside as well. The upper 70s temps coupled with the light breeze, not to mention the constant traffic and people watching, makes for an enjoyable day. Am I weird? Well yes, but that's an entirely different subject worthy of a novel. Tucker is great. I encourage anyone to take to the streets, literally. Get a comfy pair of shoes, grab your essentials, and get to it! If not Tucker, do this in your hometown/small town/city...wherever. The perspective is really different...and worth it! **For out-of-towners, Tucker is a moderately sized town about 15 miles east of Atlanta. |
